Schema, Citations, Authority: The GEO Ranking Factors Most Agencies Still Ignore

3 Sep 2026 Blog

Most GEO content still reads like a schema checklist: implement structured data, tick the box, move on. That checklist mentality is exactly why so many technically competent sites remain invisible to standalone AI assistants.

Schema Presence Isn’t Schema Quality

A recent audit of a UAE-based delivery brand illustrates the gap precisely. Overall schema implementation scored strongly, and was validated across every page type.  Dig into the detail, though, and the Article-type schema fields specifically were thin, roughly 90% complete rather than fully built out. That’s not a failing grade. It’s the difference between “schema exists” and “schema is doing the job it’s meant to do” – and most audits stop checking at the first threshold.

This distinction matters more for AI visibility than for traditional ranking. Google’s AI Overviews used to lean heavily on organic rank, but that link has been breaking down through 2026 – a growing share of AI Overview citations now come from pages that don’t even rank in the top 10. Ranking strength is no longer the safety net it was, which makes schema gaps more exposed than ever, not less. Standalone assistants like ChatGPT don’t have that cushion either. They’re reading structured data directly to establish what a page is and who’s accountable for it, and thin fields are exactly the kind of gap that erodes confidence in citing a source.

Authority Is Relational, Not Just Structural

The same audit found the site’s entity relationships forming what’s best described as a one-way web: the brand linked out to sources establishing context, but nothing linked back, and there was no clear author identity tying content to a credible, checkable person. AI models building trust in a source look for exactly this kind of reciprocal, verifiable relationship. A site can have flawless on-page schema and still fail this test, because authority isn’t something a single page can claim on its own.

Citation Is the Pillar Agencies Skip

Off-site citation scored the weakest of all pillars in this audit, with near-zero independent citation despite a reasonably active backlink profile. The nuance: over half of that backlink profile turned out to be spam residue from previous link-building campaigns, contributing nothing to AI trust signals and, if left unaddressed, actively working against new citation-building efforts.

What This Actually Means for Fix Priority

The agencies still treating GEO as a schema-and-done exercise are optimising for the pillar that’s usually already closest to complete. The pillars actually holding sites back sit further down most checklists: schema field completeness (not just presence), two-way entity relationships with verifiable authorship, and independent off-site citation clean of spam residue.

For businesses looking to strengthen these areas, TIDAL’s GEO services are built to address the technical, entity, and citation factors that influence AI visibility – beyond simply implementing schema.

None of these require a rebuild. They require checking past the first pass, and treating “implemented” and “sufficient” as two different questions.

Cyber Gear Launches Online Campaign Options for ChatGPT Ads

1 Sep 2026 Blog

OpenAI rolled out several updates a few days back that shift ChatGPT Ads from a pure awareness play to a full-funnel advertising channel.

Advertising in ChatGPT represents a significant evolution in digital marketing.

According to Sharad Agarwal, CEO of Cyber Gear, “As people increasingly use AI assistants to discover products, compare services, research businesses, and make purchasing decisions, brands are looking for new ways to reach consumers within AI-powered experiences. Unlike traditional search advertising, where users see a list of sponsored links alongside organic results, advertising in ChatGPT could become more conversational and context-driven.”

Instead of simply displaying an advertisement, AI-powered advertising can potentially connect a user’s intent with relevant products, services, or businesses at the moment they are considering an action.

This creates an opportunity for brands to become part of the customer journey rather than simply competing for clicks.

Mr Agarwal, added, “At Cyber Gear, we believe this shift could create a new discipline alongside SEO, AEO and GEO: optimizing brand visibility for AI conversations. Companies will need authoritative content, strong brand signals, accurate information, and a trustworthy digital presence to increase the likelihood of being discovered through AI-powered search and recommendations.”

Custom audiences:

You can now target users based on your own data.

First-party lists, lookalikes, and retargeting segments are all in.

For accounts that were getting clicks but struggling to control who saw the ads, this is a huge unlock.

Conversion-optimized bidding:

The platform can now bid toward a conversion event instead of clicks or impressions.

Before this update, the algorithm optimized for in-chat behavior.

Now it optimizes for the conversion events you’re actually aiming for.

Geographic exclusions and budget pacing:

You can exclude specific markets and set the platform to automatically pace spend to your monthly target.

Both were missing at launch.

Both are now live.

Bulk campaign tools:

Creating hundreds of campaigns is finally practical (and won’t take 40 hours).

EU expansion:

31 new European markets are live. If your campaigns have been limited to North America, that’s a new lane.

The self-serve floor is gone entirely.

Most importantly, what started at $200K minimums in February 2026 is now fully open to any advertiser with a budget and a product.
